mendeleyHow to Apply a Delay Before Digital Product Fulfillment

Big Digital Downloads allows you to delay the automatic fulfillment of digital products after an order is confirmed.

This feature helps prevent conflicts with post-purchase apps and improves compatibility with upsell flows, ensuring customers receive all purchased digital files without delivery issues.

Why Use Fulfillment Delay?

By default, digital products are fulfilled immediately after purchase. However, some Shopify workflows require a short waiting period before fulfillment occurs.

Adding a delay is especially useful when using:

  • Post-purchase upsell apps

  • One-click upsell funnels

  • Cross-sell or add-on offers

  • Checkout extensions that modify the order after payment

Key Benefit

A fulfillment delay gives customers time to accept additional offers. Any extra digital products added during this period will be included and delivered seamlessly.

This creates a smoother experience and avoids partial deliveries.

How Fulfillment Delay Works

Once enabled:

  1. The order is confirmed in Shopify.

  2. Big Digital Downloads waits for the selected delay period.

  3. After the delay ends, all digital products are automatically fulfilled and delivered to the customer.

Available delay options:

  • Immediate fulfillment (default)

  • 15 minutes

  • 30 minutes

  • 1 hour

  • 2 hours

  • 4 hours

Step-by-Step: Enable Fulfillment Delay

Follow these steps to configure delayed fulfillment:

  1. From your Shopify admin, go to Apps.

  2. Open Big Digital Downloads.

  3. Navigate to Settings.

  4. Make sure Auto fulfill digital products is enabled.

  1. Locate the option Delay before auto-fulfillment.

  2. Select your preferred delay time:

    • Immediate

    • 15 minutes

    • 30 minutes

    • 1 hour

    • 2 hours

    • 4 hours

  3. Save your changes.

The delay will now apply automatically to all digital product fulfillments.

When Should You Use a Delay?

We recommend enabling fulfillment delay if your store uses:

  • Post-purchase upsells for digital products

  • Bundled digital offers

  • Sequential purchase funnels

  • Apps that modify orders shortly after checkout

Example Scenario

A customer purchases an online course.

Immediately after checkout, they are shown an upsell for bonus materials.

Because fulfillment is delayed:

  • The customer can accept the upsell.

  • Both products are added to the order.

  • The customer receives everything.

Important Notes

  • The delay only applies when Auto fulfill digital products is enabled.

  • Customers will still receive their files automatically.

  • This feature does not affect payment processing or order confirmation.

  • Digital files remain securely delivered through Big Digital Downloads.

Best Practice Recommendation

For stores running upsells, a delay of 15–30 minutes usually provides the best balance between customer experience and operational efficiency.
